Choosing a sports bra for running: a practical fit check

A sports bra needs to work with the movement you intend to do. The right starting point is your fit and comfort, followed by the manufacturer's support guidance for that particular design. A familiar label or attractive colour cannot answer those questions on its own.
Use the brand's own measuring instructions
Check the current size chart for the exact product and market you are buying from. Do not assume that a size in one brand or everyday bra will transfer unchanged to another running style. If a measurement sits between sizes or the shape feels wrong, ask the retailer about a fitting rather than trying to compensate by overtightening straps.
Check three separate areas
Brooks' running-bra fit guidance recommends a band that sits snugly and level, cups with smooth coverage rather than spilling or excess space, and straps that do not dig in. You should be able to breathe comfortably. These are useful fitting checks, not a promise that every design will suit every person.
- Band: look in a mirror and check that it remains level as you raise and lower your arms.
- Cups: check the sides and neckline as well as the front; smooth coverage matters more than the size printed on the label.
- Straps and fastening: check whether you can adjust and operate them comfortably without assistance.
Move before deciding
Where the retailer's trying-on conditions allow, move your arms and gently jog on the spot. Check seams, underarm edges and any overlap with your running top. A bra that feels acceptable while standing still may feel different when you move. Keep tags and packaging intact until you understand the retailer's return conditions; do not assume a used trial run is included.
Compare the practical details
Make a short checklist before purchasing: size chart, intended activity, fastening, adjustability, fabric and care instructions. Consider whether you can easily wash and dry it between your normal sessions. Read actual product specifications rather than treating terms such as ultimate or performance as a measurable guarantee.
Inspect your existing bra for changes in fit, worn fastenings or fabric that no longer feels supportive. Replacement timing depends on use, washing and the item itself; a calendar alone is not a fit assessment.
Build a comfortable outfit
Try your chosen bra with the tops you normally wear. Our guide to running tops for changing weather helps you consider the outer layers. This is an independent buying guide, not a claim that Fair Weather Runner currently stocks sports bras or has personally tested every model.
