Coastal marathon kit: planning for an exposed race day

A coastal marathon packing list starts with the event you have entered. An exposed promenade, a beach section and a technical coast path can require very different choices. Do not let the word coastal stand in for checking the route.
Read the current event instructions
For an event in Dymchurch or anywhere else on the coast, confirm the current organiser, date, route, surface, cut-off rules, mandatory kit, aid stations and transport arrangements directly with the organiser. An older race report is not confirmation of the current event. Save a copy of the instructions where you can find it on the day.
Make two lists: items the organiser requires, and items you personally need. This keeps an optional accessory from distracting you from a missing race number, required layer or travel document.
Plan around weather and local access
The National Trust's countryside and coast guidance advises checking local weather, tide information where relevant, and staying on proper routes away from cliff edges. Follow event instructions and local closures. A race entry is not permission to ignore a changed route or hazardous conditions.
Check the forecast again close to departure. Pack a waiting layer and a dry finish layer separately from the clothing you intend to run in. Consider how you will keep car keys, travel tickets and a phone protected from rain.
Keep running kit familiar
Use clothing, socks and carrying equipment you have already tried during suitable preparation. Check waistbands, seams and pocket access together as an outfit. A new bag can fit differently once it contains a phone, keys and the items required by your event.
If you use a reusable gel flask, check capacity, closure and cleaning instructions before deciding what to carry. It is a container, not a hydration or fuelling plan. Follow the event's provision details and your individually appropriate preparation rather than copying another runner's quantities.
Pack in three groups
- Before the start: event instructions, required identification or number, travel essentials and a suitable waiting layer.
- For the course: familiar clothing and shoes, mandatory kit and an accessible carrying arrangement.
- After the finish: dry clothing, a bag for wet kit and a clear journey-home plan.
Our phone and key carrying guide can help compare pocket arrangements, while running headwear covers different brim and fit options. Buy to fill a real need, not to make the checklist longer.
